Clunky voice control has existed for ages, but spoken interaction with devices using natural language has recently seen a big boost in reliability, user adoption, and widespread availability to developers to include in new apps and devices. Apple’s Siri, Google Now, Microsoft Cortana, Amazon Echo and others have sparked an interest in bringing voice to a lot more apps and Internet of Things devices. In addition there is a need to control 3rd party apps and IoT devices from these virtual assistants. Platforms are emerging that allow developers to address these two use cases.

Historically, adding voice capabilities to apps and devices started from speech-to-text engines. Modern voice platforms focus on the natural language processing (NLP) technology that transforms plain text into structured, machine-readable, consistent intents.

Our Developer Satisfaction Tracker research is based on the 11th edition (Q2 2016) of Developer Economics, SlashData’s global online developer survey which reached more than 16,500 developers across 140 countries,in the first half of 2016. More than 8,500 and 2,600 of those developers were asked questions about mobile and IoT technologies, respectively. The data was weighted to minimise sampling bias, providing an unmatched dataset for analysis. Mobile and IoT developers were asked if they are using voice platform technology, and if so what they value and what they lack from the solutions they use. Based on this data we produced benchmarking and profiling analysis for all key Voice Platforms, along with profiling of their users vs. non-users.
