This report provides data and insights on trends that allow you to estimate the addressable market for machine learning and data science technologies, in terms of the number of people using such technology. We measure the global population of active developers and data scientists, including serious hobbyists and students, who self-identify as being involved in machine learning or data science.
The report discusses several aspects of the machine learning developer population that may help you to fine-tune your addressable market size. We split developers by their professional involvement, the type of project they are working on, their level of influence in purchasing decisions, geography, their use of hardware acceleration, as well as their use of programming languages and specific machine learning technologies.
- How many machine learning developers and data scientists are there?
- Who is considered a machine learning developer?
- How much influence do machine learning developers have on tool purchase decision?
- Where are machine learning developers located?
- How big are the addressable markets for machine learning technologies, including hardware acceleration?
- Which programming languages should your SDK prioritise?

Developer Economics is a large-scale online developer survey designed, produced and carried out by SlashData twice per year. As such, we have rich historical data to draw from. The research in this report draws on data going back to the 11th edition from Q2 2016. Since then, over 26,000 Machine Learning developers and data scientists have responded to our surveys.
The 13th edition survey ran over a period of nine weeks between April and June 2017. It reached an impressive 21,200+ respondents from around the world. As such, the Developer Economics series continues to be the most global independent research on mobile, desktop, IoT, backend, web, game, AR/VR and Machine Learning developers and data scientists combined ever conducted.
